Renowned consultant urologist Alan Doherty sees patients privately at HCA UK’s flagship The Harborne Hospital in Birmingham, as well as other centres in the West Midlands.

  • In 1982, he undertook undergraduate training at The Middlesex Hospital and completed surgical training at The Royal Marsden and Charing Cross Hospitals in London in 2001.
  • He also trained at The Institute of Urology before becoming a consultant urologist in 2001 at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, the largest urological cancer centre in the West Midlands.
  • Alan has successfully completed one of the largest caseloads of prostatectomies in the UK, undertaking more than 3,000 operations.
  • He’s recognised for his expertise in nerve-sparing techniques that reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction and incontinence from prostate cancer surgery.
  • Alan was instrumental in developing an innovative live online prostate cancer results centre, enabling patients to track their individual recovery and compare outcomes in a clear and meaningful way. It was shortlisted for a prestigious Health Service Journal award.
  • He was twice voted one of the UK’s top ten prostate cancer surgeons in a poll of urologists for the Daily Mail. 
  • Outside of work, Alan loves spending time with his family, growing vegetables in his garden, going to the Alps in the winter and summer and, of course, trying to play golf!
