Mary Kirkham
Mary Kirkham is a cornerstone of BPS and has been committed to advancing urological care and pioneering leadership in urology nursing over several decades. She’s a nationally respected figure who’s consistently led clinical innovation, transformed nursing practice and elevated standards of care for patients, winning prestigious awards along the way.
- Mary was one of the UK’s first-ever Clinical Nurse Specialists in the field of urology and one of the first Presidents of the British Association of Urology Nurses, a position she was proud to serve in for six years.
- She won Nursing Standard Cancer Nurse of the year in 2004 and has inspired generations of nurses with her unwavering dedication to patient care, pioneering clinical practice and national leadership.
- After 40 years’ service in the NHS, in 2013 she began working with Birmingham Prostate Specialists, where she continues to support urology patients throughout their journey.
- In November 2025, she was awarded the highest accolade in urology nursing, The Rachel Lever Medal. It was given in recognition of her exceptional contribution to urology nursing.
- Outside work, Mary’s a keen gardener and walker, and loves theatre, cinema, concerts and eating out with friends and family as well as staying home with a jigsaw.
