How does BPS make results data meaningful?

Not all patients are equal. That’s why, at BPS, we categorise all the patients we see in clinic, with either a cancer or benign prostate condition, into risk groups.

For example, we classify patients for radical prostatectomy as:

  • An index case: A patient with good-quality erections who has a disease suitable for a nerve-sparing technique on both sides of their prostate
  • A standard case: A patient who doesn’t have a high-risk disease or any other serious illness (most patients)
  • A high-risk case: A patient whose cancer may have already metastasised/ or who has already had several previous procedures

Starting from this clear and differentiated baseline makes comparing results more meaningful and allows us to develop personalised best practices for each patient.

We also have a dedicated specialist nurse whose role is to carefully collect and record data. We ask patients to:

  • Have flow rate/ bladder tests and fill in a detailed questionnaire after surgery.
  • Come back at three months/ 12 months and two years post op for follow-up, depending on the procedure
