What are the risks of BPH treatment?
Every treatment has different benefits and risks. Our specialists will be able to help you balance these with the possible significant benefits.
GreenLight laser therapy
- Even with high-quality surgery, it’s common to develop a retrograde (dry) ejaculation. This means that semen goes into the bladder instead of out of the penis during orgasm to be safely passed out with your urine.
- This is the only common long-term side effect, and many men find it a good payoff to gain permanent relief from urinary symptoms.
- There’s a very low risk of developing impotence or incontinence.
Aquablation therapy
- There’s a lower risk of developing retrograde ejaculation, although you may notice that you have less semen volume.
- There’s a higher risk of bleeding and of more apical and anterior tissue getting left behind, possibly resulting in the higher risk of needing another procedure at a later stage.
Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP)
- With a traditional monopolar glycine TURP, there’s a rare but potentially dangerous risk of having a reaction called TUR syndrome if the resection takes more than one hour.
- For very large prostates, only a skilled surgeon will be able to control the bleeding and resect enough tissue to achieve good long-term outcomes or minimise the risk of complications such as clot retention.
- The risk of retrograde ejaculation is high, but the risk of incontinence and impotence is low if the procedure is done properly.
