Which BPH treatment is best for me?
What’s best for you will depend on a whole range of factors. We offer nearly all the most proven and trusted approaches at BPS, as well as all the latest and most advanced techniques. No procedure is without its risks and side effects.
A Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP)
- This common, minimally invasive surgical procedure is used to treat urinary symptoms caused by BPH.
- The quality of your TURP will depend greatly on the skill and experience of your surgeon, and, when done well, it can be a very effective standalone treatment.
GreenLight laser treatment
This reliable, effective, minimally invasive treatment for BPH creates a wider channel for urine flow. It can effectively treat any prostate, even up to a very large 200g, if it’s combined with a trim TURP.
- We use a high-powered laser to vapourise excess prostate tissue.
- Your surgeon has direct vision for increased accuracy.
- You’ll have less bleeding and a faster recovery than with traditional techniques.
- It’s great at removing large amounts of tissue.
- We often combine it with a trim TURP.
Aquablation therapy
This robotically assisted surgical treatment for BPH uses a high-pressure water jet to precisely remove excess prostate tissue.
- Your surgeon is guided by a technician and ultrasound images, which are used to create a model of what needs to be removed.
- It’s a safe, heat-free approach.
- The procedure is routinely performed with a trim TURP to remove flaps of residual tissue and stop excessive bleeding.
- It can be used for larger prostates.
Prostatic artery embolisation (PAE)
- Developed to help treat very large prostates, weighing over 150g.
- Can be carried out by our specialist practitioners under local anesthetic.
- They’ll locate the larger arteries supplying your prostate and block them off, which will shrink the prostate, hopefully reducing obstructions to the prostatic urethra caused by excessive BPH.
We also perform traditional Rezum (steam-based) and UroLift (clip-based) procedures that don’t remove excess tissue, but instead either kill or displace it.
The aim of all these approaches is to get rid of the kink in your urethra created by your enlarged prostate.
Any of these techniques, when done well, can be an effective procedure that delivers great outcomes. Which is right for you will depend on the severity of your symptoms and your lifestyle, the size and shape of your prostate, your priorities and your time of life.
