Why do we recommend having an MRI fusion biopsy?

An MRI scan gives us a view of the position, size and features of a possible prostate cancer lesion.

What’s a high-quality MRI scan?

Not all MRI scans are equal, and that means that the quality of insight they offer varies too. A high-quality MRI is more likely if it’s:

  • Conducted in a high-volume prostate centre with time to get the details right.
  • Interpreted by skilled radiologists using advanced image interpretation software to deliver a highly accurate picture.
  • Reported by radiologists and supported by diagrams showing precisely where abnormalities are located and what levels of risk they pose.

MRI fusion combines MRI and ultrasound to provide a much clearer localisation of the abnormal area for sampling.

  • The contours of the MRI’s digital image are superimposed on the live images obtained by a rectal probe with ultrasound.
  • This helps us identify a clear target area for biopsy and avoid unnecessarily sampling tissue outside it.

To have precise treatment, you need precise diagnostics. Some consultants advocate a prostate biopsy in all cases in which the PSA is ‘abnormal’, even if the MRI scan is normal.  Presumably, that’s because the quality of the MRI report isn’t good enough for them to trust that they are not missing a significant prostate cancer.

At BPS, we believe a high-quality MRI of the prostate reduces the need for an unnecessary, invasive biopsy.
