I’ve been told I have prostate cancer. What next?

Cancer is a scary word, and getting a diagnosis is always a shock. So, it’s worth remembering that the point of prostate screening is to pick up cancer early, before it spreads to other parts of your body.

  • Screening can pick up very small cancerous lesions that may not go on to cause significant problems.
  • It’s easy to panic and get over-treated, having invasive surgery that causes more harm than good.
  • Prostate cancer is only truly dangerous if it spreads - but that can take many years. That’s why it’s often said that people die with prostate cancer, not because of it.

So, if you’ve been told you have prostate cancer and have been recommended surgery, it’s a good idea to start by getting an expert second opinion
