What’s salvage radiotherapy and why do I need it?

Salvage radiotherapy is radiation treatment for prostate cancer following a prostatectomy. It’s aimed at removing any residual or recurrent prostate disease that your consultant is worried about following surgery.

Salvage radiotherapy can:

  • Help to eliminate any residual cancer cells by targeting the original tumour site and/or the pelvic lymph nodes.
Control local recurrence, with the aim of leaving you cancer-free.
  • Your specialist team may suggest salvage radiotherapy following surgery if a subsequent PSA test or repeat imaging suggests that there’s still some residual disease in your prostate area.

It’s performed by our specialist team using a standard radiotherapy machine on the area that was treated with surgery.

Common side effects include fatigue, diarrhoea and urinary issues.
