Is my cancer suitable for focal therapy?
Focal therapies are appropriate if:
- The MRI and biopsy results agree on the location of the cancer, called ‘concordant’.
- Yours isn’t a very aggressive type of tumour (with a Gleason score below 8).
- The cancer can be treated without too much collateral damage.
Whether you decide to choose a focal therapy will also be influenced by your personal circumstances and experiences.
- For example, if you’re 45 and still looking to have children, focal therapies will be more attractive than a prostatectomy.
- Equally, if you’re over 80, you may want a lighter touch procedure than radiotherapy, making focal therapy ideal for you.
With BPS, your consultant will always offer highly personalised advice, based on what’s best for you.
