What are the types of focal therapy and their benefits?
All focal therapies look to precisely identify then destroy a target. Some use heat and some an electrical current or cold. They’re driven by precision diagnostics, which are essential for success.
- High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) creates a focus of heat the size of a grain of rice via ultrasound waves to destroy tissue. The focused beam is moved through the target area, killing the cancer, with a wide margin. It’s particularly effective for treating cancers in the part of your prostate near the rectum (known as posterior).
- NanoKnife uses needle-based pulsing electrical waves to target the upper part of your prostate (known as anterior), meaning it can treat cancers that HIFU can’t.
- Cryotherapy harnesses extreme cold and it’s a particularly useful treatment option if you’ve had radiotherapy in the past.
The big benefit is that all focal therapies are minimally invasive and targeted, so they help to preserve your sexual and urinary function as well as ensuring a rapid recovery.
All focal therapies are performed as day-case procedures under general anaesthesia.
