What are focal therapies?
As their name suggests, focal therapies are effective targeted treatments that kill only the problematic part of the prostate, not the whole gland.
Precise focal treatment helps to preserve healthy, normal tissue and quality of life, making them a popular, minimally invasive choice for certain prostate cancers. It’s estimated that about a quarter of patients with early prostate cancer in the London area are now being considered for focal therapy and many of these will be suitable. Word is spreading!
A skilled surgeon can precisely isolate, target and hopefully eliminate the cancer using either focused heat (HIFU), an electrical current (NanoKnife) or cold (Cryotherapy).
Focal therapies are extremely effective if:
- There’s a single visible cancer contained within the prostate.
- The MRI and biopsy information agree on the location of the cancer, which is called ‘concordant’.
